Samburu is located on one side of the Ewaso Nyiro River, the waters of which flow throughout the region and give life to an otherwise dry, desert landscape. Wildlife is constantly drawn to the riverbanks, making the river one of the best places for sightings and the focus of many game drives. Samburu has a healthy population of both leopards and lions, whilst impala, buffalo, hundreds of bird species and huge herds of elephants are also present.
What makes Samburu really special however are the fascinating desert-adapted wildlife unique to this part of the country. These creatures make up what’s known as the ‘Samburu Five’ or ‘Samburu Special Five’, and include the Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, Grevy’s zebra and gerenuk.
As well as rewarding game viewing, the scenery of Samburu is incredibly picturesque and well worth taking the time to explore. The land is largely open bush, with riverine forests of acacia, doum palms and the peak of Mount Kiotogor visible in the distance.
