WILDEBEEST MIGRATION
Whether you’re watching hippos wallow in the Great Ruaha River, tracking the Big Five in the Ngorongoro Crater or following the epic wildebeest migration across the Serengeti – you’ll love the truly ‘big’ game experience that is Tanzania.
If you want to actually track the wildebeest migration, it has to be in Tanzania. Pack a good pair of binoculars and join a mobile camp that closely follows all the action, including a front-row view as the herds of wildebeest dash across the crocodile-infested waters of the Mara River.
Alternatively, consider the cool, swampy areas of Tarangire National Park, where huge herds of elephant come down to bathe and play.
Or Katavi, where you’ll find serious numbers of crocs and hippos – some of them in pods of up to five hundred.
LUSH VEGETATION
If, however, you want to explore lush forests and verdant vegetation, head straight to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the world’s largest volcanic caldera and sanctuary to an extraordinary proliferation of wildlife. Nearby lies Lake Manyara, where you can’t miss the pink flamingos that skim the surface of the country’s biggest soda lake, or the area’s famous tree-climbing lions.
For boat trips and birdwatching, make your way south to two of Africa’s largest and least exploited wildlife sanctuaries. Herds of elephant, buffalo and roan antelope roam the hills and rock-strewn landscape of the mighty Selous Game Reserve, while Ruaha National Park protects a truly untamed landscaped that has changed little since the days of the early European explorers.
