ABOUT THE ITINERARY
Our family Argentina itinerary has been created to suit families of all ages and interests and has been put together to showcase some of the highlights of Argentina, as well as the lesser known areas too.
At just over two weeks it can be shortened or lengthened, but has been designed to make the most of your time away and utilising as many direct flights as possible (as we know how boring airports can be!)
Argentina is famous for it’s gaucho (cowboy) history and whilst away you will stay in authentic estancias as well as some first class hotels, ideal for families looking to explore the surrounding area.
With our English speaking local guides you will explore the jungle and waterfalls of the mighty Iguassu Falls, on the border with Brazil and even experience a wet and wild boat-trip into the falls. You will also discover the cosmopolitan city of Buenos Aires, famous for football, tango and it’s excellent restaurants.
From Buenos Aires you will head south, into the spectacular snow-capped mountains of the Argentine Lake District, where you will have chance to ride, hike, kayak and explore the beautiful forests and lakes of the Nahuel Huapi National Park. Then continue south to the serenity of Patagonia, where you will mini-trek across the mighty Perito Moreno Glacier.
Your penultimate stop is one of South America’s wildlife hotspots, a remote farm on the Atlantic coast, famous for its marine life and wild and untamed scenery. With some luck you will see Southern Right Whales, Elephant Seals and possibly evening Orcas.
Your time in Argentina comes to an end at a relaxing estancia in the fertile planes of the Pampas, just outside Buenos Aires. A chance to relax and enjoy the warm hospitality before flying home.
DESIGNED BY SPECIALISTS
Bear in mind, these are just a starting point as all holidays are customised to the specific requirements of our guests. Whether you prefer a different style of accommodation, a greater focus on a particular interest or to go to a different destination all together, every itinerary is created individually around your preferences.
IGUASSU FALLS
Arrive into Iguassu airport, where you will be met and driven into the Iguassu National Park on the Brazilian side of the Falls. With your guide you will explore the trails and experience some wonderful panoramic views of the 250+ waterfalls.
Afterwards you will driven across the border into Argentina and to your hotel, which is surrounded by jungle and has a beautiful collection of outdoor swimming pools.
On your second day you will witness the falls from the Argentine National Park. Your guide will take you on a full day tour which includes exploring the upper and lower circuit of the falls and also to the hugely impressive ‘Devil’s Throat’. It’s here you get the most impressive close-up views of the waterfalls crashing over the surrounding cliffs.
You will also get to see the falls from a different perspective, as a speed boat takes you up the river to see the falls from below. This a great way to escape the humidity of Iguassu!
Stay: Two nights at the Loi Suites Iguazú – bed & breakfast
BUENOS AIRES
After breakfast on day 3 you will be driven to Iguassu airport on the Argentine side of the Falls and take a direct flight to the Argentine capital.
On arrival you will be met and driven to your hotel in the beautiful neighborhood of Recoleta, known for its impressive architecture, parks and restaurants.
Your hotel is just across the road from one of Buenos Aires’ most impressive sights, the Recoleta Cemetery. It is here that Eva ‘Evita’ Perón is buried, and with your guide you will have the opportunity to visit and also see some of the other attractions of the city, including the colorful neighborhood of La Boca, where tango originated and the home of Boca Juniors football club.
The following day you will be taken on a bike tour through the picturesque parks of Palermo and to the newly designed port area of the city, Puerto Madero. You will also visit the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve – a wetland between the Rio de la Plata, the world’s widest river, and Puerto Madero – it’s known for being the only place in the city inhabited by wild, native plants and animals.
Stay: Two nights at Loi Suites Recoleta – bed & breakfast
THE LAKE DISTRICT
On day 5 you will fly to Bariloche – the largest town in the Argentine Lake District and surrounded by Andean forest and snow-capped mountains.
Your hotel boasts a superb location on the shores of Lake Gutierrez, backed by soaring mountains and surrounded by beech forests. You’re in the Nahuel National Park here, the ideal place to go trekking, horse riding, mountain biking, fishing, sailing, paragliding and skiing in season. You’ll also notice a distinct ‘continental’ flavor in the Swiss-style chalets, chocolate shops and fondue restaurants.
Stay: Three nights at Estancia Peuma Hue – full board
EL CALAFATE
After enjoying the Lake District, on day 8 you will fly south to El Calafate, the entry point to Argentine Patagonia.
During your stay you will enjoy a private tour to the mighty Perito Moreno Glacier, 5km wide and one of the few glaciers in the world to still be advancing. You’ll take in the spectacularly blue lakes of the Los Glaciares National Park and explore the Patagonian Icecap, an area of immense glaciers topping the Andean Mountains.
During your visit to Perito Moreno Glacier, you will have the opportunity to go mini-trekking on the glacier (minimum age of 10 and maximum age of 65) – a unique experience as you feel the glacier moving beneath your feet.
Stay: Two nights at the Hotel Esplendor el Calafate – bed & breakfast
VALDES PENINSULA
On day 10 you will fly north to Trelew, a frontier town in northern Patagonia and close to the Atlantic coast.
Over the next three days you will be staying at a remote lodge called El Pedral, 70km from the closest town of Puerto Madryn and at the entrance to the Golfo Nuevo bay on the Atlantic Coast.
The region is famous for wildlife, with Southern Right Whales, Orcas (Killer Whales), Elephant Seals, South American sea lions, Magellanic Penguins, guanacos and rhea all found in the area.
Over the next three days you will be taken on excursions to see the best of the wildlife in the area, including a visit to the penguin and elephant seal colony at Punta Ninfas and a whale watching excursion from Puerto Piramides. You can visit the nearby lighthouse, enjoy traditional Patagonian food and stay in a historic farm, dating back to the early twentieth century.
Stay: Three nights at El Pedral – full board
Note: Southern Right Whales can be seen from June to December, but for best sightings visit in August and September. Orcas and Magellanic Penguins can be seen throughout the year except May to August.
THE PAMPAS
After breakfast on day 13 you will fly back to Buenos Aires and be driven out into the fertile plains of the Pampas.
Your final two nights in Argentina will be spent at a traditional estancia, which has been modernised to offer comfort, but maintain its character.
Home of the gaucho, the Pampas are famous for horse-riding and cattle production. Over the next two days you will be able to ride, take a polo lesson, explore the grounds on mountain bike or take a cookery class. Equally for those who prefer to relax, there is a very enticing outdoor pool and the estancia can organize massages too.
Stay: Two nights at Estancia La Bandada – full board
